We are often asked how our feathers have been obtained and whether they are cruelty-free. We categorise our feathers in the following way....
ETHICALLY SOURCED - The have been taken from domestic or free-roaming game birds & non-protected birds. They are obtained on private land in compliance with UK Wildlife Conservation regulations. The birds are frozen before the feathers are taken to ensure they are free from mites & disease.
NATURALLY SHED - We have a limited number of Naturally Shed feathers as these can only be taken from DOMESTICALLY kept birds. The birds are frozen before the feathers are taken to ensure they are free from mites & disease.
It's not possible to collect naturally shed feathers from wild birds - usually they are protected by wildlife conservation laws, they cover large areas of land and shed their feathers little and often. If found at all, they've usually become dirty and damaged and can also be prone to carrying mites or disease (yuk!)
FARM/FACTORY SOURCED - These are usually a bi-product of the meat industry (although some birds are clipped). These are chemically treated for mites & disease and have often gone through a chemical dye process to achieve any bright colours.
